WHRO Public Media Will Air and Stream the 2019 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 16

Students from Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina Will Compete in Annual Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee

NORFOLK, Va. (February 12, 2019) – The 2019 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, in partnership with WHRO, will air on Saturday, February 16 starting at 2 p.m., on WHRO-TV15 and stream on Facebook. This year marks the twelfth year WHRO Public Media will partner with The Virginian-Pilot to host The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee. Students from more than 60 middle schools will convene and compete for this year’s title.

All of Saturday’s competitors have won their respective school spelling bees and qualified for the regional competition. The first-place winner will travel to Washington, D.C., this spring to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on behalf of the region. Last year, local 12-year-old Michael Volkov from Princess Anne Middle School in Virginia Beach won first place in the regional competition.

“WHRO Education is excited to host and broadcast the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee. This is an annual event that showcases some of our region’s best and brightest,” states Bert Schmidt, president and CEO of WHRO Public Media. “The anticipation and excitement never gets old, and ultimately, we are really privileged to be able to showcase some of our young leaders in the community.”

This year’s judges include: Bobbie Fisher, writer and editor; Shana Gray, Virginian-Pilot senior content editor; and Sara Schapiro, PBS vice president of education. WHRO-FM’s Raymond Jones will serve as host.
